In 2001 I travelled to Peru for the first time to go trekking and had a truly wonderful time. We did the classic Inca trail before travelling South to Arequipa where we did a longer trek away from any other "gringos". After this we just had time to climb the sort of dormant 5800m volcano El Misti close by Arequipa.

Then I returned with a small group of 6 in 2003, this time to the Cordillera Blanca to climb. We had some success but suffered from minor injuries, sickness and poor weather which meant we didn't achieve quite as much as we would have liked.
