This menu option allows categories to be added to or removed from the currently selected images. Though there may only be one image selected it is really intended for adding or removing a categories to/from a large group of images. A dialog is displayed with the full category tree shown on the left and a tree of all categories that are common to all of the selected images on the right.
To add a category select the category you wish to add in the left tree and click the Add button.. To remove a category select the category you wish to remove in the right tree and click the Remove button. You will see the changes immediately in the displayed category trees and when you click OK all the changes you have made will be made to all the selected images. If you select the Single Click option then there is no need to click the Add and Remove buttons; as soon as you select a category in the database window it is automatically added and as soon as you click a category in the images window it is automatically removed.
Alternatively if the Single click add/remove option is selected then there is no need to click the Add and Remove buttons. Simply click a category in the left tree and it will be added or click a category in the right tree and it will be removed.
This dialog can also be resized and will remember its previous position and size.
Categories can also be added by selecting the images and dragging them over the desired category. After dragging a selection over a category, the selection will remain active allowing the same selection to be quickly and easily dragged to more additional categories. However note that if the added category results in the selected images no longer being displayed (for example if you are displaying all images without category "X" then add category "X" to a selection, these images will no longer be displayed), then the active selection will now be different images.
See also The Category Template which can be used to create a category template that can be pasted or appended to selected images.
